Jazz Pieces

SENIOR JAZZ PACKS

Volume 1

‘Africa’, ‘Roll With It’, ‘Chilli Jam’ and ‘JT Blues’ are 4 Jazz pieces written during 2016 for Intermediate and above Jazz ensembles.  Each piece has parts for Trumpet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, optional Baritone Saxophone, Trombone and Rhythm Section. To hear a sample of the pieces and view a sample of the scores please click on the Zip File.

Piece 1: ‘Africa’  This was written in the style reminiscent to the African Jazz Pioneers of the 1950s with recurring chord patterns and catchy rhythmic melodies.  This is a fast moving piece that sounds ‘happy’ and uplifting.  It is a good piece for bands starting out as there are unison sections, ideal to involve all performers as well as solo sections.

Piece 2: ‘Roll With It’  This is a bluesy number of moderate tempo which features a catchy main melody and incorporates unison and counter melodic playing as well as solo sections.

Piece 3: ‘Chilli Jam’  A fast moving piece that is uplifting in character.  The main melody is played in unison and in harmonies with a funky backing section which accompany the solos.  Watch out for the unusual phrase lengths and key change!!

Piece 4: ‘JT Blues’ This groovy number is written in a 12 bar blues structure and incorporates a rhythmic riff line, strong harmonies, much unison playing as well as solo sections with the scope of adding your own improvisation into the backing section!!

Volume 2

‘Swingtone’, ‘Ballad For John’, ‘Boss The Funk’ and ‘Rock Your Socks’ are 4 Jazz pieces written during 2017 for Intermediate and above Jazz ensembles.  Each piece has parts for Trumpet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, optional Baritone Saxophone, Trombone and Rhythm Section. To hear sample of pieces please click on the Zip File.

Piece 1: ‘Swingtone’ This piece was inspired by 1940’s swing music.  The cheeky tune in the opening is written above a walking bass line.  However, the music moves into a more funky section giving it a more modern feel.

Piece 2: ‘Ballad For John’ This features a more expressive melodic line (song like) accompanied by luscious harmonies. Each of the instruments in the horn section take over the melodic material which develops into an uplifting ‘chorus’ section

Piece 3: ‘Boss The Funk’  This starts with a cool Bossa Nova but develops into a more funky backing section featuring solos and riff ideas.

Piece 4: ‘Rock Your Socks’ As the title suggests is a more rocky piece of music featuring a strong main motif as well as a backing and solo section.

JUNIOR JAZZ PACKS

‘Simply Jazz’

‘Simply Jazz’ is a new volume of music written for mixed instrumental groups who are at a beginner-elementary standard. The music is written in 3 main melody parts for those performers who are of an elementary standard and 3 additional simpler parts for beginner players (Harmony parts). To accommodate for all instrumental combinations, the parts are written in ‘C’, ‘Bb’ and ‘Eb’ versions using different registers and clefs. In addition to the Melody and Harmony parts there are parts for the ‘Rhythm Section’ (bass, keyboard and drums).  There are 4 separate pieces in this ‘Simply Jazz’ set, and become increasingly more demanding: within ‘Simply Jazz 3 & 4’ there are options for improvisation in the Melody Parts and there is the inclusion of sharps or flats within the Harmony Parts.

‘Simply Jazz 1’ is a lively but rhythmically easy piece written in Binary Form. Much of the melodic line moves stepwise and within a 5 note range. The music provides opportunities for solo section or player as well as unison performance

‘Simply Jazz 2’ is written in the Dorian Mode with moderate rhythmic challenges and in Binary Form. Some/most of the melodic line moves stepwise. The music has opportunities for solo section or player as well as unison performance.

‘Simply Jazz 3’ is a moderate swing 12 bar blues piece with changes in rhythmic interplay. The music has opportunities for solo section or player, unison performance as well as improvisation.

‘Simply Jazz 4’ is a slow bluesy piece written in 6/8 time in Binary Form. The music has opportunities for solo section or player, unison performance as well as improvisation.
